Tradition, Nature and Sustainability in the Vió Valley

Located in the heart of the majestic Vió Valley, our livestock farm, a third-generation family business, represents the living legacy of a way of life deeply connected to the land and nature. With a flock of 700 Churra Tensina sheep, native to our valley and currently in danger of extinction, we are proud to preserve this valuable native breed that has been part of our environment and culture for centuries.

We practice extensive livestock farming in the high mountain pastures of the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park , where our sheep graze freely from spring to part of autumn. This method of breeding, in the heart of nature, not only allows the sheep to feed on the best pastures, but also actively contributes to improving the ecosystem.

The work of Alberto and his father Miguel Ángel , as shepherds and defenders of tradition , is essential to maintaining the biodiversity of the environment. Grazing helps to create new pastures, to mow the land naturally and to keep the paths clear, preventing the proliferation of bushes and reducing the risk of fires. Every day, their silent and constant work improves the landscape and guarantees that future generations can enjoy this valuable natural space.

Our commitment is not only to livestock farming, but also to the future of Churra Tensina, the conservation of our landscapes and the balance of the ecosystem of the Vió Valley. We continue to work so that our livestock farming remains an example of sustainability, respect for nature and dedication to our roots.

Experience a Grazing Day at Patricio Livestock Farm
A Unique Experience in the Vió Valley

If you have ever wondered what a day in the life of a shepherd is like in the majestic landscapes of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, we invite you to discover it with us! In our third-generation livestock farm, we open the doors to those who wish to immerse themselves in the world of traditional shepherding and experience a day of connection with the nature and culture of the Vió Valley.

What is a day of grazing like?

🔹 Dawn in the mountains. The day begins early, when the sun is just beginning to illuminate the valleys. We meet at the farm to meet Alberto, the shepherd in charge of our flock of 700 Churra Tensina sheep, a native species in danger of extinction. After a brief explanation of the route, we begin our hike along the mountain trails, accompanying the flock as it searches for the best pastures in the high mountain meadows.

🔹 Free-range grazing. The sheep graze freely throughout the day, moving through the fresh pastures of spring and summer. As we accompany Alberto, we will discover the art of shepherding, how the flock is guided with the help of shepherd dogs and the importance of respecting the natural rhythms of the environment. During this time, you will learn how this work not only keeps traditions alive, but is also essential for the conservation of the landscape: shepherding helps create new pastures, keeps paths clear and improves the biodiversity of the park.

🔹 Rest and picnic in nature. Halfway through the day, we will stop along the way to enjoy a well-deserved rest. This is the perfect time to enjoy a picnic with local products, including churra sheep cheese and other local delicacies. While we share stories about rural life and the ecosystem that surrounds us, you will be able to enjoy the impressive views of the surrounding mountains.

🔹 Around the block.   In the afternoon, we will accompany the flock back to the sheepfolds. You will learn how the sheep find their own way and how the shepherd's work adapts to the environment so that the activity is sustainable. With the flock safe, the day of shepherding ends, but not before having a final chat with Alberto about the challenges and joys of being a shepherd in these mountains.

What will you learn during the day?
  • The importance of extensive grazing for the maintenance of ecosystems.

  • The secrets of breeding the Churra Tensina breed, and its value as an endangered breed.

  • How sustainable livestock farming protects high mountain landscapes, creates biodiversity and reduces environmental risks such as fires.

If you are interested in living an authentic agrotourism experience in an incomparable setting, where tradition and nature intertwine, this activity is perfect for you. Come and be part of our history in the Vió Valley!
